This is a waterline LCI or landing craft infantry.
I interviewed the commander of this landing craft several years ago
and was inspired by his heroic story. This LCI (553) appears in a number
of D-day photos near the Vierville exit. The ship ran aground and was
pummeled with several 88mm shells but miraculously the entire company
of 29th Division engineers and crew made it ashore safely. The ship
was re floated and towed back to England to be scrapped. The scenes
portray the arrival of LCI 553 approximately 10:30 am on D-Day. I used
a number of Battlefield Miniatures and Britannia figures. The entire
ship was scratch built and surrounded with plentiful amount of celluclay,
acrylics, and clear gloss.
