Star Decals Roundup - December 2024Star Decals, 1/72 scaleReviewed by Graham Carter Summary
FirstLook TITLE: T-80BV Cossack - Donetsk Republic
This small 110x50mm sheet is part of the ongoing series of decals for vehicles involved in the “War, conflicts and special operation in the Ukraine” as announced on the header. This is Part 15 from this Swedish company and covers two of these modern tanks, in this case from 2022-3. The sheet and single-sided colour A4 instruction guide comes in a clear resealable sleeve. The instructions show side, front and detail drawings for the two subjects which are shown in a greenish-grey overall scheme but no paint details are given. Both sets of markings are white with some red/blue/white splashes of colour. Colour and register looks good. A decal map identifies the 44 decals used on the two vehicles, along with 6 that are not. The decals themselves are matte finished and appear to be densely printed. Carrier film is prominent on the sheet but virtually disappears on the model. The decals respond well to decal setting solutions too. The items are printed on a pale blue backing and this may be an issue for modellers with poor eyesight. No kit item is indicated for these vehicles but a search revealed that Trumpeter make a kit of this Russian MBT. If this modern conflict is of interest to you then this sheet will be useful. Advantages: offering a couple of ‘different’ markings for the Trumpeter kit. Good instructions. Disadvantages: no vehicle colours suggested. Conclusion: A suitable set of alternative markings for the T-80 MBT and recommended if this is your area of interest.
TITLE: TOS-1A Russian Rocket Artillery
This small 75x50mm sheet is part of the ongoing series of decals for vehicles involved in the “War, conflicts and special operation in the Ukraine” as announced on the header. This is Part 16 from this Swedish company and covers five of these modern rocket-equipped artillery vehicles based on a T-72 chassis, in this case from Russian units in 2022-3. The sheet and single colour A4 instruction guide comes in a clear resealable sleeve. The instructions show side, front and detail drawings for the five subjects which are shown in a greenish-grey overall scheme and paint details are given. Colours range from overall green to multi-specked schemes and those with coloured rocket equipment. All sets of markings are white with some black circular markings on a couple of choices. One of the vehicles is identified as having been destroyed by Ukrainian forces in August 2022.
A decal map on the rear of the instructions identifies which of the 28 decals are used on the five vehicles. The decals themselves are matte finished and appear to be densely printed. Carrier film is prominent on the sheet but virtually disappears on the model. The decals respond well to decal setting solutions too. The items are printed on a pale blue backing and this may be an issue for modellers with poor eyesight. Colour and register looks good.
No kit item is indicated for these vehicles but a search revealed that War Wings and Free3D make kits of this Russian rocket launcher. If this modern conflict is of interest to you then this sheet will be useful. Advantages: offering a couple of ‘different’ markings for the kits. Good instructions. Disadvantages: finding a kit! Conclusion: A suitable set of alternative markings for this potent rocket-equipped AFV and recommended if this is your area of interest.
TITLE: BM-21 Grad - Russian and Donetsk in 2022-3
This small 75x60mm sheet is part of the ongoing series of decals for vehicles involved in the “War, conflicts and special operation in the Ukraine” as announced on the header. This is Part 17 from this Swedish company and covers five examples of this rocket-equipped truck in this case from 2022-3. The sheet and single colour A4 instruction guide comes in a clear resealable sleeve. The instructions show side, front and detail drawings for the six subjects which are shown in a dark greenish-grey overall scheme, some with a few blotches of other colours. The sets of markings are mainly white with some splashes of colour for the unit markings on doors and bonnets.
A decal map identifies the 48 decals used on the vehicles, along with 6 that are not. The decals themselves are matte finished and appear to be densely printed. Carrier film is prominent on the sheet but virtually disappears on the model. The decals respond well to decal setting solutions too. The items are printed on a pale blue backing and this may be an issue for modellers with poor eyesight. No kit item is indicated for these vehicles but a search revealed that Hobbyboss and ICM make a kit of this truck-based weapon.
If this modern conflict is of interest to you then this sheet will be useful. Advantages: offering a couple of ‘different’ markings for the Trumpeter kit. Good instructions. Disadvantages: none noted Conclusions: A suitable set of alternative markings for the BM-21 and recommended if this is your area of interest.
TITLE: BMP-2
This small 110x75mm sheet is part of the ongoing series of decals for vehicles involved in the “War, conflicts and special operation in the Ukraine” as announced on the header. This is Part 18 from this Swedish company and covers five examples of this Russian low profile AFV in this case from 2022-3. The titling is incorrect in that it calls the vehicle “ AFV from 1922-23 “ instead of 2022-23! A typo no doubt. The sheet and double-sided colour A4 instruction guide comes in a clear resealable sleeve. The instructions show side, front and detail drawings for the four subjects which are shown in a dark greenish-grey overall scheme, some with a few blotches of other colours. One set offers alternative markings for one vehicle. The sets of markings are mainly white with some splashes of colour for the unit markings.
A decal map identifies the decals used on each vehicle. The decals themselves are matte finished and appear to be densely printed. Carrier film is prominent on the sheet but virtually disappears on the model. The decals respond well to decal setting solutions too. The items are printed on a pale blue backing and this may be an issue for modellers with poor eyesight.
No kit item is indicated for these vehicles but a search revealed that some smaller companies make a kit of this weapon - IDAP, MMK and Free3D. These are resin and 3D printed, and only S-Model and Trumpeter produce it in plastic as far as I could find. A metal model is available at some cost! If this modern conflict is of interest to you then this sheet will be useful. Advantages: offering a range of ‘different’ markings. Good instructions. Disadvantages: Typo error in the title. Conclusion: A suitable set of alternative markings for the BMP-2 and recommended if this is your area of interest and you are able to source the kits.
TITLE: BMP-3
This small 110x75mm sheet is part of the ongoing series of decals for vehicles involved in the “War, conflicts and special operation in the Ukraine” as announced on the header. This is Part 19 from this Swedish company and covers five examples of this Russian low profile AFV upgraded variant of the BMP, in this case from 2022-3.
The sheet and double-sided colour A4 instruction guide comes in a clear resealable sleeve. The instructions show side, front and detail drawings for the four subjects which are shown in a dark greenish-grey overall scheme, three with a few blotches of yellow-brown.
No kit item is indicated for these vehicles but a search revealed that some smaller companies make a kit of this weapon but this was not clear. A metal model is available at some cost! No-one appears to produce it in plastic as far as I could find. If this modern conflict is of interest to you then this sheet will be useful. Advantages: offering a range of ‘different’ markings. Good instructions. Disadvantages: none noted Conclusions: A suitable set of alternative markings for the BMP-3 and recommended if this is your area of interest and you are able to source the kits.
