FirstLook

Modellers waited for a long time to see an accurate 1/35 scale Panther Ausf. D, but Dragon finally delivered this anticipated first prpduction variant a few years ago, followed last year with the "Premium" version, upgraded with photo-etched parts.

Voyager has upped the ante with these three new detail sets for Dragon's Panther Ausf.D.

First is a general detail set, item number PE35083. This comprises no less than six photo-etched frets, twelve turned brass parts plus several lengths of plastic and metal.

This set will supplement or replace many of the kit parts, including the characteristically long front mudguards, the rear stowage bins (including poseable lids), mesh engine deck grilles and side skirt mounts. These are really just a fraction of the massive amount of detail contained in the relatively compact box.

Some of the other highlights are guide poles for the front mudguards topped with brass balls; and gorgeous turned brass smoke dischargers. Each solid brass smoke canister is backed by delicate caps and chains - just beautifully done. The workable pistol port plugss, rear loader's hatch and delicate tool clamps are noteworthy too.

Next we have item number PEA069, Anti-Aircraft armour for the Panther D engine deck. One photo-etched fret plus 16 pre-cut sections of copper rod and one length of plastic rod will add this interesting detail to your Panther Ausf. D.

Please note that the engine grilles and the spare track holders as shown in the photo below are not included in this set, but they are a part of set number PE35083 reviewed above.

This is a more modest set, and will therefore be appropriate for less experienced modellers.

Finally we have item number PEA071, conversion parts for the early version Panther D that participated in the Kursk campaign.

This set includes two photo-etched frets, two parts in resin plus a length of metal wire.

The Kursk-style round engine deck vents are supplied in resin. Photo-etched grilles are also provided.

The second element of this set is the distinctive starboard side stowage box. This long quadrilateral box is made up from two large photo-etched parts plus smaller details, and features side latches that can be made partially workable.

Any of these detail sets, or all used in combination, will have a significant impact on your Dragon Panther Ausf. D, but you will need patience and experience working with photo-etched parts. With care and time, however, you will have a stunning replica on the table.

Recommended to experienced modellers.
