Eduard German Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf.C, photo-etched brass in 1/35–scale for DML kit (item 35688)

by Frank De Sisto

Contains two etch frets, one sheet of film and one sheet of paper, as well as five pages of instructions. Price: $24.95 USD.

The advent of the new DML Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. C has pleased fans of mid-war German halftracks, especially those who fancied this body style, yet were tiring of the quite elderly Tamiya kit. This relatively simple set will provide the base kit with quite a decent upgrade, all without a great deal of specialized experience in the use of photo-etched parts.

To begin with, the driver’s position receives new storage brackets for various bits of equipment, a new instrument panel with film or paper dial faces, foot pedals, seat back details and full internal details for all vision ports, to include film to replicate “glass” blocks. The remainder of the interior gets a new radio and rack; rifle, machine-pistol and machine-gun storage racks and brackets, and other ammo box, accessory and fire extinguisher storage brackets. There are also “hoops” upon which the canvas foul weather cover for the open-top crew’s compartment would be mounted. The two shallow “V”-shaped flanges that were used to attach the front and rear hull/superstructure sections together during construction are also provided.

The exterior stowage lockers receive latches and chains, while the tools receive new brackets, clamps and mounting hardware. There are racks to store jerry cans, and new rear fender mud flaps, as well as head and tail lamp mounts and faces. The front-mounted MG34 receives a new shield and mount, and there is belted ammo included for it and the rear-mounted MG34, plus a AAA gun sight for the rear ‘34.Altogether, this is a simple, but rather complete set. It should also prove to be easy to use as there are no overly complicated parts included.

Highly recommended.
