In these modern times, technology has changed the way models are produced and how we build them. The same goes for figure models.

3d printing allows the modeller to create figures from the computer direct to the printer. As we march yet further into the future, we can now even scan full-sized people to create exact replicas without as much as a putty knife or sculpting tools.

There is no doubt about the wonder of these computer creations, but If you would prefer to experience the unmistakable human touch there are still a number of worthwhiile options.

AC Models is one of these options.

AC Models is the creation of New Zealand sculptor and modeller Andy Cairns. He offers a growing range of 1:35, 1:32 and 1:16 scale figures and sometimes accessories, with subjects ranging from the First and Second World War, Korean War, third world and modern conclicts.

Sometimes quirky, but always full of character and life, AC Models figures will lend context, scale and a unique touch to your modelling projects.

This time we are going to take a look at one of AC Models releases:

US Sherman Crew ETO “Battle Break”
1:35 scale
Item No. ACM35059

The first set under review is 1:35 scale US Sherman Crew ETO “Battle Break”.

The set comprises five figures. All are wearing standard US tanker uniforms with a range of headgear from infantry helmet to tanker’s helmet to cloth linings. The five guys appear to be prepared for cool weather.

The figures are made up from a total of 13 parts and there is a large single casting of sandbag armour for the front hull.

The vehicle on the box art is a 76mm late Sherman with a 47 degree welded hull, large crew hatches and T23 turret. The figures should fit any 1:35 scale model of that description.

The sandbag armour might require a little fettling depending on the model used.

Casting quality is very good with just a little fine flash and minimal pinholes.

The real attraction here though is the freehand sculpting. Poses are relaxed and natural, facial expressions are appropriately gaunt and weary and the drape of the uniforms is realistic.

Parts breakdown is sensible and separate pieces are at a minimum. Some of the arms, heads and headgear are keyed to ensure correct alignment.
